The astonishing story of how Dr. Jacobs, a passionate student of Egyptology, launched a ten year long quest to discover the secrets of a long-forgotten formula for firm, youthful skin used in Egyptian medicine.

A Love of Egyptology Leads Stanley Jacobs to a Fascinating Discovery

The story began ten years ago with Dr. Jacobs, a passionate student of Egyptology, who became intrigued by a 3,600-year-old recipe that promised to “transform an old man into a youth.’’ He had discovered the formula in a partially translated text of an ancient papyrus scroll at a meeting of the American Research Center in Egypt at the University of California, Berkeley. The voluminous Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus, currently under the care of the New York Academy of Medicine, held extraordinary descriptions of medical and surgical practices dating from 2500 to 3000 BC, in addition to the long-lost skin transforming recipe.

Recognized for their highly advanced civilization, the ancient Egyptians were also master chemists and physicians who mixed medicines and performed some of the earliest-known surgeries. Guided by their belief in everlasting life, these early pharmacists to the queens and pharaohs formulated this royal ointment to keep skin youthfully smooth. The recipe ends with “proven good a million times.”

But the key ingredient, “hemayet fruit,” remained a mystery. It took Dr. Jacobs nearly a decade and three trips to the land of the pyramids to unlock the modern-day translation of this ancient word lost in time. Hemayet turned out to be “bitter almonds,” which contain mandelic acid. It was this potent ingredient that ensured stunning improvements in skin elasticity, softening or eliminating lines by tightening the skin while also reducing acne and brown spots.

It's likely even King Tutankhamen knew about the magic of bitter almonds as a container of them were buried in his tomb. As detailed in their ancient recipe, the Egyptians used bitter almonds as a topical cream after many boilings and washings in the Nile. Bitter almonds are not sold in the U.S., so Dr. Jacobs imported them from China, and put in the expert hands of Jules Zecchino, a New York chemist and former vice president of research and development at Estee Lauder. Zecchino verified that the true secret of the bitter almond is its mandelic acid, among the most powerful of the alpha-hydroxy acids, used today primarily to suppress the bacteria responsible for acne.

Because the mandelic acid molecule is larger than those found in retinoic and glycolic acids, it also penetrates skin more slowly – offering sustained results with virtually no irritation. To create the serum's exclusive formula, Zecchino added resveratrol, glucosamine, licorice root and a variety of other modern ingredients. And so, this powerful skin rejuvenator was reborn. The ancient Egyptians knew their secret recipe worked, but it took Dr. Jacobs' ground-breaking research to demonstrate that mandelic acid could measurably promote the visco-elasticity of skin. He is currently expanding his clinical study, and hopes to unveil other applications for mandelic acid, including treatment of burn patients and scar tissue.
